Sea swimming has long been an activity for many a Brightonian, and Dr Mark Harper (Ha. 1980-85) was Chief Inspector of a research project investigating the mental health benefits of cold water swimming.
Mark is a Consultant Anaesthetist at Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals and an expert advisor to the Outdoor Swimming Society. He is also a keen open water swimmer in the sea at Brighton and he was recently the Chief Investigator in a study looking at the physical and mental health benefits of cold water swimming.
His work has shown that cold water swimming can contribute to recovery from depression.
