Over £14,000 has been raised by pupils of Brighton College Prep School. At their annual Christmas Fayre, pupils were tasked with creating fundraising ideas that had no cost attached to them, inspiring a number of enterprising and fun ways to raise money for charity.

Amongst the activities was a 'Wishes Stall', raising 50p each time a pupil had a wish granted by the school, such as having tea with the Headmaster or wearing nail varnish to school for a day. Other popular fundraising activities included a chocolate tombola, cake stall, DVD sale and computer game station. The activity which raised the most was the Mad Christmas Games stall, which saw a group of children run a series of fun games for fellow pupils to play.

Amongst the organisations receiving donations is Garden Route Children's Trust (GRCT), a charity based in South Africa which feeds a maize meal called E'Pap to some 4500 undernourished children per day, as well as providing school equipment.

Penny Fleming, Chair of GRCT, visited the Prep School for Tuesday's assembly: 'I enjoyed coming to the school and was amazed by the huge amount raised! The £4500 will provide a bowl of E'Pap on every school day for a whole year, for more than 200 children!' Penny was presented with a cheque by some of the pupils whose entrepreneurial skills and hard work helped to raise the much needed funds, and personally thanked them for all their efforts.

Karen Tucker, Chair of the school's parents' association said: 'It is not just young children who benefit but also very hungry teenagers in a South African secondary school. Two teenagers said that the support provided by the GRCT enabled them to stay at school to complete their studies.'

Local organisations benefiting from the Fayre include Chestnut Tree House, also receiving a donation of £4500, and Brighton-based charity, Fun in Action, who will receive £1000.
