Work on Diamond Jubilee Pavilion is Underway!

Pupils and staff have been tremendously excited this week as structural work on the Diamond Jubilee Pavilion has now begun.  With the main framework now in place, the new sports hub is beginning to take shape, set against the beautiful backdrop of the Sussex Downs countryside. Over the coming weeks, contractors will work on creating the changing rooms, referee and first aid rooms, and a large social space with a café-bar, all of which are much-needed at the site.

OBRUFC at The East Grinstead Sunshine 7s

The OB Pelicans and supporters arrived at East Grinstead on Sunday morning in the driving rain. After a delay to assess the pitches, it was decided that, despite the conditions, the tournament would go ahead. Only 12 teams were available so the draw was re-organised and we played the Marauders first. Despite a try by Ryan Bhimji, we lost to the semi-professional Marauders 10 - 5.

The Cricketer Cup First Draw

Old Brightonians 103 for 3, lost to Oundle Rovers 104 for 3. Despite the drought of the early summer, the day of the first round of the Cricketer Cup dawned with rain, that wet sort of rain that continues all day. Undaunted by the wet conditions, eleven Old Brightonians travelled to Oundle for the fixture. It was decided by both teams that only a ten over match in the rain was possible, not ideal but a better alternative to replaying the game the following weekend.

"Dear Old Brightonian Ruggers" by Charlie Grant (S. 2006-07)

With preparations underway for the World Cup in New Zealand this year, it is with an inflated ego and a great deal of national pride that I humbly submit that we have a new contender this year: The United States of America. That's right: the Eagles will go all the way this year, and no one will see it coming.

The OB Golf Society at the Cyril Gray Tournament (2011)

In this year's Cyril Gray Trophy (team scratch matchplay foursomes for the more mature golfer) Brighton faced a tough battle against regular finalists Stowe in the 1st Round. So it proved. Warwick Sabey (B. 1959-65 )and Geoffrey Bush (H. 1965-70) played first pair and lost to some very steady par play. Nigel Dearsly (L. 1960-65) and Robin Colbourne (H. 1960-65) played second and went down quite close to home. Chris Pett (H. 1962-67) and newcomer Adrian Wood (A. 1971-76) played well and were all square after 17 and called it a half when the top two games had gone. 2½ - ½ to Stowe.

The 1st XV have had another excellent year. Beating Daily Mail Champions Whitgift (23-22) along with Epsom, Cranleigh and Dulwich has enabled them to come top of this years Evening Standard League. A huge amount of credit should go to all the players but in particular Joe Beckett and Pahymahn Seyed-Safi who have both been in the 1st XV for the 3 years. The 1st VII also won the Reigate Norton Rose Sevens and the Worth Sevens beating Epsom and Tonbridge in the final respectfully.

Sports Quiz at Brighton College

An enthralling evening of sporting knowledge and prowess was possibly being held somewhere on Thursday 3rd March, but at the Brighton College Sports Quiz the name of the game was definitely fun and fundraising.  Ian Braid kicked off the evening showcasing the fantastic work of SportsAid, joint recipient of the evening’s proceeds, who offer financial support to talented young sportsmen and women at the beginning of their careers.  John Inverdale was magnificent as quizmaster, encouraging competitive spirit and berating those underhand or rather under-table tactics being employed by certain teams.

Brighton v Hurst... Sussex's biggest old boy game!

Despite the inclement weather, Hurst v Brighton was back on for the prestigious Padwin Cup. As of late my youthful exuberance for literary mastery that once adorned our beloved Pelican has been lacking and having not played for the Burgundy and Blues for some time I had forgotten how much fun is to be had in this annual fixture against an opposition who was tenacious to the end if lacking any serious flash of rugby ability.
