It was no surprise that we came across the expected teething problems that herald any inaugural match - i.e. we didn't know each other, everybody seemed to have the same preferred position, and nobody wanted to put herself forward to organise such a motley crew. Therefore, going down 3-17 in the first quarter to an extremely talented Brighton College 1st VII seemed inevitable.

The team put up a good fight keeping the pressure tight but just could not stop the particularly quick and skilful 1st team. Jane Haviland (F. 1979-81) found herself playing down the wrong end as defence rather than shooter, but held a good fight against one of the College's top shooters. So for the second quarter we decided to have a little shuffle round! This time with Corrie Pope (F. 1993-98) and Nicky Stanton (W. 2001-03) both playing out of position we could tell this was going to be an interesting game. Lil Jones moved into the centre position and held the centre court together well aided by Charlotte Allan (F. 1993-98) as wing defence and Corrie Pope, who moved into wing attack.

By half time we had started to find our feet a little but were still down by 14 goals. But one thing us Old Girls don't do is give up! However, Jane Haviland announced she had definitely found her preferred position - chief supporter and orange supplier! By the second half we were really starting to look like a team with Katie Williams (F. 1999-03) and Grace Stewart unstoppable in the shooting circle.

Kate Oakenfold (F. 1997-02) and Mel Harrison (F. 1998-03) began to show the College team who was boss with a strong show of defence. It wasn't long before the goal difference started to close and the OB girls gave the College team cause for concern. With Charlotte Allan back on for the last quarter covered with plasters after injury, we proved the Old Girls were not a team to be messed with. The team really began to bond with strength all over the court (including our now rather excited supporters!) and we finished off the game with a very satisfying score of 40-36 to the OBs. What a game!

It was a very exciting and enjoyable game. Well done to all the girls. It may be our first game but definitely not our last. We now look forward to taking on the College 1st XI in a game of hockey on Saturday 29 November 2003. Any girls who are interested in taking part, please contact the OBA Office.
