For any school to have a former pupil in a Varsity match at Twickenham is a great honour - to have two, one in each team, is rare. Former Brighton College 1st XV player Ben Maidment (R. 2004-06) helped Cambridge University to a dramatic 31-27 victory over old rival Oxford University - who were also captained by another old Brightonian, Dr Dan Rosen (D. 2000-02), in the 128th Varsity Match at Twickenham.
The Light Blues were 7-5 down at half-time but Cambridge came back to score four tries as it stunned Oxford, which won last year's edition 33-29. Ultimately, Cambridge was a worthy winner after outscoring Oxford by five tries to three with the second half producing 46 points. Victory saw Cambridge extend its Varsity Match series lead to 61-53 with 14 draws.
Brighton College's Director of Sport, Roger Nicholson said of the news: " It was such a great match but for those of us at Brighton College it was a very proud day, and an historic occasion. Everyone is immensely proud of Ben and Dan and I am sure that despite their rivalry on the pitch, they'd have realised what it meant to their old school too."
